Background Goenshari gewog is located south of Gasa Dzongkhag and it stretches over an area of 84 sq. km.
There are 129 households in the gewog, which currently hold a regular household population of 607 people. The gewog comprises of 5 Chiwogs which have 5
villages. The climate of the gewog is Sub-tropical which has usually cold winters and warm, humid summers. The annual rainfall ranges from 500mm to
1500mm in the gewog. The maximum and minimum temperatures range from 4 degree Celsius to 30 degree Celsius. Goenshari has around 90% of its total area
under forest cover. Broad-leaf forest comes to 70% and Coniferous forest about 20% of the total forest coverage. About 5%of the land is cultivable while the
rest are shrub forest and natural pasture. It has 215 acres of wetland, 57 acres of dry land, 4.44 acres of vegetable garden, 1.55 acres of Tsheri, 106.12
acres of Sokshing, 69.88 acres of Pangshing and 3522.45 acres of Tsamdro. The Punakha –Damji road runs through the gewog. However, most villages are more
than two hours walking distance from the road head. This gewog has one community school, one Out Reach Clinic (ORC), one Agriculture Extension Centre and one
Livestock Extension Centre. The gewog also has one Hot Spring Livestock
The Gewog lies in the extreme north of the
Dzongkhag with lowest number of household among other Geogs in the Dzongkhag and rears mostly the local breed of livestock with some introduction of improved
breeds like Jersey, Brown Swiss, Mithun, hybrids of poultry and piggery supplied by the Department and integrated with the local livestock population. Since
this Geog is far off from the Dzongkhag HQ, the cross breeding of cattle through artificial insemination is not available and the cross-breeding is done
through natural services by supply of the breeding bulls from the Department,
The Sector has Livestock Extension Centre located at Kapatapsa that
provides the Livestock extension services to the farmers in the Geog. The existing LEC will be handed over to Education Sector and the new RNR Center
relocated during the 10th Plan since it will be taken over by the Education Sector.
