Background Talo gewog stretches over an area of 31 sq. km. There are 368 households in the gewog, which currently
hold a population of 1510 people. The gewog comprises of 8 Chiwogs which have 8 villages. The altitude of the gewog ranges from 1300-1500 m above the sea
level. The gewog is one of the smallest gewogs of the Dzongkhag and lies south-west of the Dzongkhag Headquarters. It shares its borders with Guma gewog in
the North-East and with Thimphu Dzongkhag in the South-West. About 45% of the land is covered by Broad-leaf forest, 35% by Coniferous forest, 15% is
cultivable land and the rest are shrub forest and natural pasture. Motor-able road reaches up to Talo and Nobgang, and a majority of the households have
electricity. It has two Community schools, one RNR center and one Basic Health Unit (BHU).
Livestock
Current Situation The farmers of Talo
Geog rear mostly the local breed of livestock with some introduction of improved breeds like Jersey, Mithun, hybrids of poultry, and piggery supplied by the
Department and integrated with the local livestock population. The Department has supplied breeding animals like Jersey bulls, Mithun, donkey stallion for
crossbreeding program. The lower portion of the Geog bordering Guma Geog is covered AI programme from the Dzongkhag Veterinary Hospital, Punakha. The new
AI Center will be established with the FY of 06-07 in the Geog. The Geog has perennial subtropical and temperate improved pasture species of 5.05 acres as
well fodder trees and oat species grown in the Geog. The Livestock extension services are being rendered by the Livestock Extension Centre located at Nobgang
that will be soon handed over to community as old LEC and new RNR Center had been built already at Bemina which is centrally located for the farmers of Talow
Geog.
