Barp Gewog Profile.
Barp Gewog consists of seven chiwogs, with 233 households. It covers an area of about 25 sq.km(approx.) with elevations ranging from 1400 meters to 1800 meters above sea level.The gewog experiences an annual rainfall of about 500mm-1500mm approximately with the temperature ranging from 5degree C-30 degree C. The gewog lies in the subtropical region and experiences hot and humid summers with heavy rainfall during the monsoon months of June, July, and August. Winters are moderate.
The gewog is about 12km from Punakha Dzongkhag and is one of the most accessible gewogs. Paddy is the principle cereal crown in the gewog followed by spring wheat. Most households derive cash income from the sale of vegetables and rice. The fertile Lobesa valley offer promising opportunity for farm mechanization.
Over 90% of the household have electricity connections and about 75% of the population have access to piped drinking water supply, although shortages of safe drinking water source still remains in the gewog. The gewog has one lower secondary school and a new middle school is under construction.. The population avail health services from Punakha, Wangdue Phodarng and Thimphu while the Outreach clinic at Lobesa renders maternal and child health services.
EXTENSION SECTORS IN THE GEWOG.
Livestock The total population of local cattle in the gewog is around 520, with 240 Jersey, 2 horse, 42 local pig, 22 pig improved, 95 poultry local and 92 poultry improved. The gewog has three Breeding stock stationed at Gamakha(PJ-1143), Pachakhay(PJ-115) and Pangna(PJ-142).
Forestry About 92% of the gewog is covered by forest, and the forest comprised of Chirpine and Broad leaved mixed with conifer. In terms of hectare, about 1482ha of forest is covered by chirpine and 875ha covered by broad leaved with mixed conifer. Thus, the area covered by forest is around 5824.147 acres. The total area of Grazing land in the gewog is 4035.79acres and Sokshing land of 151.61 acres. Private forest are also promoted in private lands and the total area is about 0.99 acres.
Agriculture The principle crops found in the gewog are paddy, wheat, mustard, horticulture crops and vegetables. The gewog is dominated by wet land cultivation followed by dry land cultivation. The main cash crops grown are vegetables and citrus. The terrain of the agricultural areas in the gewog is characterized by very gentle slope. Farm labor shortage and insufficient irrigation supply are the important constraints in the gewog in terms of agriculture production.

School Lobesa Lower Secondary School has a total of 765 students with 350 boys and 414 girls. The school currently has 26 permanent teaching staffs and a new middle school is under construction. In addition, Barp gewog currently has three NFE centres.
