GUMA GEWOG


1. Background/Introduction


Guma Gewog is located on the bank of Puna Tsangchu and Mochu up towards the north. The gewog shares the border with Kabji Gewog in the North and has Dzomi and Chubo Gewogs on the other side of the Punatsangchu. It stretches over an area of 34sq.km with seven chiwogs comprising of 41 villages. There are about 270 households which currently hold a population of 2240 people. The gewog has 19 chortens, 7 lhakhangs and 6 neys.

Settlements are quite dense and the land is with altitude ranging from 1200-2200 m (source agri.) above the sea level. Guma gewog falls under the sub-tropical zone. We have chirpine forest at the lower altitude and mixed warm broad leaf forest at the higher levels. Trees grown are Oak species, Puyum(schima wallichii), Khashing(michilia species), Chenju (exbucklandia/populnea), Pumoruto (haevenea), Rutoshing (carpinus) Walnut(juglans regia), Lumashing (Maccaranga), etc. (source forest) Summers are hot with temperature reaching almost 32 degree Celsius. In winter the minimum is 12 degree Celsius and maximum of 19 degree Celsius. Land turns dry and is windy with occasional frost in the morning..

Over 910.34 areas of land are under wetland cultivation and about 176.32 acres are dry land. Almost all varieties of crops (Dhu na ghu) are grown in the gewog, but importance is given to paddy cultivation. Various vegetables and fruits are also grown and the surplus are taken to the market. Over the past few years, government has promoted the growth significantly and has enhance the income of the people.Farmers in Guma Gewog rear locl bread, improved bread like Jersey, Mithun cross, hybrids of poultry and pigs. The extension services of Livestock sector to the farmers are being catered by the Dzongkhag Veterinary hospital located at Lakeythang.

Guma Gewog has fairly good access to infrastructure and services. There are two community schools, one primary school, one (partially incomplete) ORC and almost all the chiwogs are connected with farm road. Being the seat of the Dzongkhag headquarter, it houses number of infrastructures like the Dzongkhag hospital, Higher Secondary School, Middle Secondary School, Dzongkhag Veterinary hospital and also the new township comes under the gewog which is of immense help to the public of Guma gewog.
