Punakha Observes “Zero Waste Hour” from 4:00 to 5:00 PM

For the first time, the staff of Punakha Dzongkhag, Khuruthang Municipality, Guide Association of Bhutan and public of Punakha old town and Changyul joins the nation in observing the "Zero Waste Hour" from 4:00 - 5:00PM by cleaning the surrounding of Dzong, Thangzona, crematorium area, Changyul, Taxi parking area and surrounding of shops at extended town. Beside the cleaning program, the general public were sensitized on the initiative, its purpose, objective and responsibility of each and every one of us for managing our own waste. 

“I feel cleaning ones surrounding and making a responsible community is imperative and should be taken more seriously. Just going around and picking some waste does not make sense. I suppose community ownership and responsibility should be inculcated”, Dzongkhag Planning Officer said. “Even people traveling by taxi and private cars should be educated and informed about waste management and "littering is an offense" rules by soliciting support from taxi drivers and private individuals”, he added.

The “Zero Waste Hour” initiative is to be observed on the 2nd day of every month starting from 2nd July 2019 and it was launched by Her Majesty the Gyaltsuen on 2nd June 2019 to commemorate the Coronation Day of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo.
