Punakha Cattle Show 2020 at Samdingkha Village under Toedwang Gewog

In collaboration with Dzongkhag, the Livestock Sector, Punakha organized cattle show at Samdingkha under Toedwang Gewog on 10th January 2020. The event was graced by Foreign Minister Lyonpo Tandin Dorji. Officials from Dzongkhag, Chubu Gewog Administration and Toedwang Gewog Administration also joined the program. Further, around 250 dairy farmers from Chhubu and Toedwang Gewogs took part in the show.

The event was aimed to encourage farmers to keep high yielding and higher longevity dairy cattle for the sustainable dairy value chain in the Dzongkhag. The panel of judges evaluated and ranked around 150 jersey cattle above 50% blood inheritance gathered during the show. The Regional Livestock Development Centre, Wangdue also took an opportunity to exhibit Azolla technology, improved beekeeping, animal health and sales of livestock products. Quiz competition was also held among four dairy farmer groups of Dzomi, Guma, Kabisa and Toedwang Gewogs as an attempt to share knowledge, skills, and abilities on livestock husbandry practices to the farmers gathered.

The cattle show was concluded by awarding prizes (both in cash and kind) to the best dairy cattle under the category of milking and dry cows, heifer, female and male calves. Prizes were also awarded to the farmers who delivered the highest milk at Milk Processing Unit, Khuruthang during the year 2018-2019 and winners of the quiz competition. The sector also took an opportunity to handover a group registration certificate issued by the Department of Agricultural Marketing and Cooperatives to three dairy farmers groups of Guma Phuensum Ochey Detsen, Dzomi Om Tshongley Detsen, and Khawa-Jara Gonor Sochong and Lotey Mangyul Detsen. Aum Pema from Jara village who is one of the progressive dairy farmers in Toedwang Gewog had won the maximum prizes in the event.
